Mitigating Circumstances Information
Description:
Any student who believes that there are circumstances (sudden ill health or close family bereavement for example) which have seriously affected their performance in assessment is advised to submit an online claim through ChiView so that circumstances may be taken into account when the Board of Examiners meets to discuss candidature. The online claim must be accompanied by independent documentary evidence, which can be uploaded with the online application form.
MARKS ARE NOT ALTERED BECAUSE OF A STUDENT’S MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES. However, the Board’s decision on what to do in certain situations may be influenced by the mitigating evidence being considered. Claims for mitigation are only for the notification of circumstances which have not previously been taken into account by the University, or where it is felt that the effect of your circumstances on your performance has been greater than allowances which have already been made (for example where a disability has been accommodated through use of a SARA form, an exception to the usual effect(s) of the disability would need to be demonstrated).
If you consider that there are particular circumstances that the Board of Examiners should take into account in the mitigation of your performance on any assessment, you should complete the online Mitigating Circumstances claim form through ChiView. If you have any queries on how to complete this, please contact the mitigating circumstances team (mitcircs@chi.ac.uk). Claims must be received, evidenced, and processed prior to the Board of Examiners in order to be considered; mitigating circumstances cannot be claimed retrospectively (eg. For a previous semester’s assessment). The Mitigating circumstances FAQs to give further guidance on all aspects of applying for mitigation are available from mitcircs@chi.ac.uk
Mitigating circumstances should not be confused with applying for an extension. Extensions are handled on a programme basis and are considered for approval by the Programme Coordinator. Mitigating circumstances should also not be confused with alternative or additional examination / assessment arrangements, which may be made for students with disabilities or specific learning difficulties. These arrangements should be made through completion of a SARA form, supported by the Wellbeing team.
The Wellbeing team may be able to help provide guidance and where appropriate support your application for Mitigating Circumstances:
